Tantalum-Niobium ore (commonly referred to as Coltan) is a critical, strategic rare metal resource essential for modern electronics and superalloys. Because tantalite and niobite occur with varying mineralogical characteristics, primarily intergrown with magnetic minerals, their beneficiation process requires a highly customized, multi-stage approach.
GravityMineral has developed an advanced "Gravity-Magnetic Separation Combined Processing Solution." Through a precise "roughing-finishing" two-stage design, this turnkey EPC solution efficiently recovers Tantalum-Niobium from raw ore or tailings. By utilizing high-capacity gravity separation to discard barren rock, followed by high-gradient magnetic purification and optional acid washing, we guarantee a premium final concentrate where the combined Ta₂O₅ + Nb₂O₅ grade exceeds 50%.

Our flowsheet is engineered to capture both coarse nuggets and fine coltan sand while rejecting iron impurities that lower the final commercial value.
Proper sizing is crucial for optimal gravity separation.

The classified fractions are fed to specific gravity separators to rapidly discard barren silica and rock.
The rough gravity concentrate must be purified of magnetic iron minerals to reach metallurgical grade.
| Process Link | Main Equipment | Technical Characteristics | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coarse Gravity Roughing | Sawtooth Wave Jigger | Processes 0 - 10mm size fractions. Recovers coarse nuggets. | 5 - 30 t/h |
| Fine Gravity Roughing | Spiral Chute | Processes 0.02 - 2mm size fractions. Zero power operation. | 2 - 4 t/h (Per Set) |
| Magnetic Roughing | Medium-Strength Magnetic Separator | Field strength 0.6 - 1.0T. Removes strong magnetic impurities. | 10 - 50 t/h |
| Deep Magnetic Purification | High Gradient Magnetic Separator | Field strength 1.2 - 1.5T. Extracts weakly magnetic impurities. | 5 - 20 t/h |
| Final Gravity Selection | 6-S Shaking Table | Processes 0.074 - 2mm. Ultimate visual sorting precision. | 0.5 - 2 t/h |

A: Tantalite and Niobite are almost always intergrown or associated with heavy, magnetic iron minerals (like magnetite and ilmenite) in nature. Gravity separation alone will catch all these heavy minerals together. Because metallurgical buyers demand an extremely low iron content (Fe ≤ 0.5%), you must use high-gradient magnetic separators to selectively strip the iron away from the valuable Coltan.
A: In some complex deposits, the tantalite crystals are physically coated in a thin layer of surface iron oxide (rust). This coating makes the tantalite act "magnetic," causing it to be mistakenly pulled into the tailings by the magnetic separator. A brief, targeted acid wash dissolves this surface iron, ensuring the tantalite remains non-magnetic and is perfectly recovered in the final concentrate.
GravityMineral provides highly customized, turnkey EPC solutions for medium-sized Tantalum-Niobium beneficiation projects, crude concentrate purification, and tailings recycling globally.
