The 3-Stage Coltan Extraction Flowsheet

Our flowsheet is engineered to capture both coarse nuggets and fine coltan sand while rejecting iron impurities that lower the final commercial value.

Stage 1: Pre-Treatment & Auxiliary Process

Proper sizing is crucial for optimal gravity separation.

  • Screening & Grading: The raw ore is rigorously screened to ensure particle size uniformity. The material is divided into distinct fractions (e.g., +0.5mm and -0.5mm) to feed the appropriate downstream sorting equipment.
  • Dewatering & Drying: After wet processing, concentrates are processed via natural drying or low-temperature rotary dryers to prepare for dry magnetic separation.

Stage 2: Gravity Roughing (Enrichment)

The classified fractions are fed to specific gravity separators to rapidly discard barren silica and rock.

  • Jigging: Coarse-grained ore (+0.5mm) is fed into Mineral Jiggers. Jigs provide massive processing capacity and instantly recover coarse coltan nuggets.
  • Spiral Chutes: Medium and fine-grained sand (0.074 - 0.5mm) is routed to Fiberglass Spiral Chutes to efficiently concentrate the heavy black sands.

Stage 3: Selection & Deep Purification

The rough gravity concentrate must be purified of magnetic iron minerals to reach metallurgical grade.

  • Magnetic Separation: The concentrate passes through High-Gradient Magnetic Separators (1.2 - 1.5 Tesla) to selectively strip out magnetic iron and titanium impurities.
  • Acid Washing (Optional): Depending on the ore, an acid washing pretreatment may be applied to dissolve surface iron oxides coating the tantalite crystals.
  • Shaking Table Sweeping: The non-magnetic product is passed over 6-S Shaking Tables to further refine the material and elevate the final Ta-Nb grade.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Coltan Processing

Q1: Why is Magnetic Separation mandatory for Tantalum-Niobium?

A: Tantalite and Niobite are almost always intergrown or associated with heavy, magnetic iron minerals (like magnetite and ilmenite) in nature. Gravity separation alone will catch all these heavy minerals together. Because metallurgical buyers demand an extremely low iron content (Fe ≤ 0.5%), you must use high-gradient magnetic separators to selectively strip the iron away from the valuable Coltan.

Q2: What is the purpose of the Acid Washing pretreatment?

A: In some complex deposits, the tantalite crystals are physically coated in a thin layer of surface iron oxide (rust). This coating makes the tantalite act "magnetic," causing it to be mistakenly pulled into the tailings by the magnetic separator. A brief, targeted acid wash dissolves this surface iron, ensuring the tantalite remains non-magnetic and is perfectly recovered in the final concentrate.
