Ilmenite (FeTiO₃) is the primary commercial source of titanium dioxide (TiO₂). Because it possesses both a high specific gravity and weak magnetic properties, a "Gravity + Magnetic Separation" combined process is the absolute industry standard for achieving high commercial grades.

However, the processing strategy differs drastically depending on the ore source. Customized Flowsheets: Sand vs. Hard Rock

We design your plant specifically around the geological characteristics of your titanium deposit.

Flowsheet 1: Alluvial (Sand) Ilmenite

Because sand deposits are naturally liberated, no crushing or grinding is required.

  • Washing & Screening: Raw sand is fed into a Trommel Screen or Rotary Scrubber (Capacity: 50-300 t/h) to break up clay balls and remove barren roots and oversize gravel.
  • Gravity Enrichment: The -2mm heavy sand is pumped to an array of Spiral Chutes for roughing and sweeping. Spirals quickly discard light silica sand, producing a heavy mineral concentrate.
  • Magnetic Purification: The heavy concentrate passes through a Multi-Gradient Magnetic Separator. Low-intensity magnets first remove highly magnetic magnetite, followed by high-intensity magnets (0.8 - 1.5 Tesla) which selectively pull the weakly magnetic ilmenite into a pure TiO₂ concentrate.

Flowsheet 2: Igneous (Rock) Ilmenite

Hard rock requires an extensive comminution circuit to liberate the titanium crystals.

  • Crushing & Grinding: Raw rock undergoes primary and secondary crushing (Jaw & Cone Crushers). The crushed ore enters a Ball Mill and is ground down to a fine -0.3mm to achieve full mineral liberation.
  • Gravity Pre-Enrichment: The milled slurry is pumped to Spiral Chutes or Mineral Jigs to discard the bulk of the non-valuable light gangue rock, reducing the load on downstream equipment.
  • Magnetic Purification: The enriched concentrate is processed through a Multi-Gradient Magnetic Separator with an adjustable field strength to perfectly isolate the ilmenite from non-magnetic heavy minerals (like rutile or zircon).

A: Ilmenite sand is rarely pure; it is almost always mixed with Magnetite (highly magnetic) and other heavy minerals like Zircon or Rutile (non-magnetic). A multi-gradient separator uses a weak magnetic roller first to pull out the trash magnetite. Then, a highly powerful roller (0.8 - 1.5 Tesla) pulls out the weakly magnetic ilmenite, leaving the non-magnetic zircon/rutile behind. A single-strength magnet cannot perform this complex separation.
