Offshore Tin Placer Ore Gravity Beneficiation Solutions

Seabed placer tin (submarine cassiterite) is an increasingly vital marine mineral resource, characterized by stable grades, immense volumes, and low excavation costs. However, processing sand at sea presents unique engineering challenges, primarily regarding spatial limitations on mining barges and the corrosive marine environment.

GravityMineral has pioneered a highly efficient "Offshore Pre-Treatment + Onshore Concentration" processing model specifically for submarine environments. By utilizing a high-capacity sand extraction, screening, and jigging system directly on the dredging vessel (300-1500 tons/hour), we discard 99% of the barren sand immediately back into the ocean. The resulting rough concentrate is then transferred to a land-based shaking table facility for final purification. This turnkey solution is the industry standard for large-scale seabed placer tin operations.

The 2-Phase Submarine Tin Extraction Flowsheet

Our split-phase engineering design minimizes the size of the required offshore dredging vessel while maximizing the purity of the final commercial tin concentrate.

Phase 1: Offshore Pre-Treatment System

Executed directly on the marine dredging vessel to instantly discard barren sand.

  • Sand Pumping: High-power, corrosion-resistant Sand Pumps extract the seabed mineral slurry. Intakes are equipped with debris-removal grills to block large shells and marine rocks.
  • Shipboard Screening: The slurry is pumped into a double-deck, anti-corrosion Marine Trommel Screen for rapid particle size classification.
  • Volume Jigging: The classified sand enters marine-grade Mineral Jiggers. Circular Jigs process the coarse fractions (5-10mm), while Sawtooth Wave Jigs recover the fine fractions (0.5-5mm). The heavy tin concentrate is stored in the ship's hold, and the light sand is returned to the ocean.

Phase 2: Land-Based Sorting System

Executed onshore to achieve the final, high-grade metallurgical product.

  • Concentrate Transfer: The rough jig concentrate is shipped to the onshore facility.
  • Shaking Table Selection: The rough concentrate is processed across a massive, parallel bank of 6-S Shaking Tables. The tables perform precision density sorting to reject remaining heavy impurities.
  • Final Product: The system consistently outputs a premium, commercial-grade tin concentrate (Sn ≥ 60%).
  • Tailings Dewatering: Onshore tailings can be processed through an optional Filter Press dry-drainage system to protect local coastlines.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Submarine Tin Mining

Q1: Why split the process between the ship and the shore?

A: Deck space on a marine dredging vessel is incredibly expensive and limited. Shaking tables (which are required for final purification) take up massive amounts of floor space and are sensitive to the rocking motion of the ocean. By using Jigs on the ship (which are compact and highly resistant to wave motion) to discard 99% of the barren sand back into the sea, we only have to transport a small volume of heavy concentrate back to the stable, land-based shaking tables.

Q2: How does the equipment handle the corrosive saltwater environment?

A: Standard mining equipment will rust and fail rapidly when exposed to seawater and ocean spray. All of our offshore equipment—including the sand pumps, trommel screens, and jigs—is specifically engineered with heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings, marine-grade alloys, and fiberglass components to ensure long-term durability in extreme submarine environments.

Global Application & Advantages

This split-phase program successfully combines the mature experience of traditional tin gravity beneficiation with the harsh engineering realities of seabed mining. It has been successfully deployed in multiple offshore placer tin projects across Southeast Asia.

  • Massive Production Capacity: The modular shipboard system processes 300 to 1500 t/h and can be flexibly configured according to the exact dimensions of your vessel.
  • Unmatched ROI: By utilizing seawater directly for the washing/jigging process and instantly discharging tailings back into the ocean, operational costs are reduced by over 60% compared to onshore processing.
  • Wave-Resistant Stability: Jiggers feature simple mechanical structures that are highly resistant to wind and wave rocking, ensuring continuous operation regardless of sea conditions.
